Change of gender entry and first names
Legal background
From 01 November 2024 onwards, the “Act on Self-Determination with regard to Gender Registration” (Selbstbestimmungsgesetz, SBGG) is going to replace the “Act on Changing First Names and Determining Gender Identity in Exceptional Cases” (Transsexuellengesetz, TSG) from 1980. The SBGG is intended to strengthen the self-determination of persons concerned regarding gender assignment and choice of first name. It enables people to have their gender entries and first names changed by declaration to the registry office, without a ruling by any third parties.
Harmonisation of registrations within the university administration can also be completed based on this change.
