Grinding Tomography Lab

Grinding tomography is a destructive method. Although the body fossil is gone, its three-dimensional virtual model persists and can be inventarized as virtual fossils in official collections. The datasets allows insight into much more internal details than the originals.

The maximum size of objects is currently limited to 200 mm x 200 mm x 250 mm. Grinding tomography thus allows for the three-dimensional analysis of large objects which be hardly accessed by other methods.

The maximum resolution is 5 µm per voxel in all three dimensions. The precision of the virtual 3D models of the fossils is thus enormous. Grinding tomography as a method has a high potential for palaeontology, geosciences and further applications. In case of interese please contact Christina.Ifrim@geow.uni-heidelberg.de.
