RAN Newsletter 01/2025 News from the network

In the “News from the network” section, research alumni report on exciting, interesting or unusual projects that they have realized in collaboration or cooperation with Heidelberg colleagues. German researchers abroad with a Heidelberg background can also present their scientific contributions to the circle of Heidelberg University research alumni.

In this issue, philosopher Dr. Carl O'Brien and neuroscientist Prof. Dr. Roger Traub present two recent publications in which they were involved. Carl O'Brien introduces the anthology Plotinus, Neoplatonism and the Transcendence of the One, which he edited and which contains the best-known publications of his mentor, the Heidelberg philosopher Jens Halfwassen (1958-2020). Roger Traub's volume, co-authored with Heidelberg medical scientist Prof. Dr. Andreas Draguhn, deals with the mysteries of the brain, which still presents us with many puzzles despite ever new scientific findings.

In this issue of the RAN Newsletter, historian Dr. Anna Arpaia, anthropologist Dr. María Agustina Morando, an electrical engineer who works at the intersection of computer science and remote sensing in the area of algorithm development for satellite Earth observation Dr.-Ing. Arnab Muhuri, lawyer Prof. Dr. Roman Petrov and archaeologist Prof. Dr. Paul A. Yule report on their research projects. They will provide insights into the diverse research topics of Heidelberg Research Alumni. For example, Anna Arpaia will present her work on the so-called Digests - a late antique compilation of the jurisprudence of legal scholars in the classical Roman imperial period; Roman Petrov will analyze how Russia's invasion of Ukraine has influenced the EU's enlargement and foreign policy; and Paul A. Yule will report on the documentation of archaeological finds from pre-Christian times.
