Direct Access to Degree Programmes for Master Craftsmen and Graduates of Equivalent Vocational Training

Persons who hold vocational qualifications will be awarded the general higher education entrance qualification if they have successfully completed a Master Craftsman's examination or equivalent vocational training.

Those who have completed relevant vocational training may therefore apply directly to Heidelberg University for any degree programme, provided that they have attended an advisory session related to that specific degree programme.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites for the general higher education entrance qualification for vocationally qualified persons are:

  • successful completion of
    - the Master Craftsman’s examination, or
    - an equivalent vocational training programme, or
    - completion of a programme at a technical school as defined in § 14 of the Baden-Württemberg School Act (Schulgesetz für Baden-Württemberg) and
  • written confirmation from a university of participation in an advising session in accordance with § 58 of the State Higher Education Act (Landeshochschulgesetz - LHG).

Vocational Training

Vocational training will be considered to be equivalent to the Master Craftsman’s examination if:

  • the duration of the training programme was a minimum of two years
  • the training consists of advanced vocational education, i.e. it provides further vocational training to allow students to acquire higher-level skills and functions
  • the advanced vocational training course comprises at least 400 hours of instruction and is comparable to a Master Craftsman's examination with regard to the scope of the contents and the depth of the training

Vocational training in this context includes, in particular:

  • degrees from an Academy of Administration and Business Administration, i. e. a degree in Administration and Business Administration (Verwaltungs und Betriebswirt - VWA), an Administrative Diploma (Verwaltungs-Diplom-Inhaber - VWA), a degree in Business Administration (Betriebswirt - VWA) or a degree in Business Administration with a specialisation (Betriebswirt - VWA), if at least two years of vocational training were completed prior to studies at the Academy of Administration and Business Administration
  • advanced training pursuant to the respective Advanced Training Examination Regulations of the Federal Government or the agencies responsible, in accordance with § 53 and § 54 of the Vocational Training Act, provided that the programme comprises a minimum of 400 hours of instruction, e.g. Business Specialist (IHK programme), such as Trade Specialist, Banking Specialist, Insurance Specialist, Industrial Specialist, Sales Specialists, Operational and Strategic IT Professionals and Business Economists (IHK programme)
  • advanced training pursuant to the Advanced Training Ordinances, in accordance with § 19 of the State Nursing Act (Landespflegegesetz) (e.g. for gerontological psychiatry, intensive care, nephrology, oncology, surgical and endoscopic services, nursing service management for geriatric care and outpatient services, psychiatry, rehabilitation, or ward management)
  • the advanced training of nurses and paediatric nurses for the management of nursing services and tasks within hospital management
  • the advanced training of nurses and paediatric nurses for teaching and management positions in schools for nursing professions.

Application

With appropriate recognition of a vocational university entrance qualification, Master craftsmen and those with equivalent vocational training may apply for admission in a degree programme.

The grade point average from the vocational training programme will be considered the average grade of the higher education entrance qualification, which is decisive for university admission procedures in degree programmes with restricted admission. The waiting period is calculated from the date of successful completion of the Master Craftsman's examination or equivalent further training, but no earlier than 1 April 2006.
