German Studies Institute Partnership „Philology – Technology – Translation“

Heidelberg University / Ivane Javakhishvili State University (Tbilisi, Georgia) / Brusov State University (Yerevan, Armenia) 

The DAAD-funded German Studies Institute Partnership "Philology – Technology – Translation" builds on the partnership "Cultural Transfer in Literary, Media and Specialised Communication". It was launched in cooperation with the Chair of German Philology at the Faculty of Humanities of Ivane Javakhishvili State University in Tbilisi. The IÜD has maintained this cooperation since 2018, with the aim of supporting the development of a new sub-field on cultural transfer with a focus on translation and translation studies at the Chair of German Philology of the Ivane Yavakhishvili State University in Tbilisi.

With the follow-up project approved for 2021–2023, the cooperation will be extended to the Brusov State University of Yerevan in Armenia. The goal is to further develop and modernise the curricula of the Master's and Bachelor's degree programmes with a focus on translation in both countries. Therefore, the project participants work on a stronger integration of the German language and the integration of corpus linguistics as well as language and translation technology components. In addition, more intensive support for doctoral students and qualified young researchers is planned. A doctoral school will be established for this purpose. In addition, research stays in Heidelberg will be made possible.

In order to achieve these goals, further training courses as well as workshops and colloquia will be organised in Heidelberg, Tbilisi and Yerevan. At the end of the project, a supra-regional centre for academic training in German philology and translation will be founded. This will ensure long-term academic training in classroom and online formats both at the partner institutions and at other universities in both countries.
